And if you know your history
During the year 568AD, the Lombards(a race of Germanic people) invaded the Eastern shores of Italy. After a 3 year siege, the city of (ticinum) Pavia was conquered by the Lombard King Albion causing the majority of the population to flee to inaccessible coastal areas seeking sanctuary within the Byzantines. The Italian surname Sciortino is of regional origin. Regional surnames stem from place names including rivers, countries and man made features such as buildings, crossroads and many other objects. A person could be given the name indicating a place which was readily recognised. An individual living near or on a hill would be so designated, Perhaps one living or working by a church would have been giventhe name Chiesa. In this case the name would have been applied to someone who originally came from a place named Sortino or Sciortino located in Southern Italy. Also the surname may be of occupational origin. In early times names such as "Ferraro" "Fornari" and "Becari"(Smith, Baker and Butcher) were to be found in each village or town. Each bearer of the name being recognised and referred to by theoccupation they persued. After a time occupational names became hereditary even though the bearer no longer followed this trade or vocation. In this case the name would be derived from the Sicilian word Sciorta or Sciurta which means city gaurd or policeman. The surname was prominent in early Italian records which show that the Sciortino or Sortino family of Noto are descended from the Orsini family of Rome when Mainetto Orsino was Lord of the Lands of Sortino when he took the surname. Over the centuries bearers of this name have held Baronies of Saccolino, Bimisca and Cibino and were members to the nobility of Noto and Messina.
